Last night you were asked to think about ways to measure length. Let's discuss your ideas as a whole class.
Measuring length can be carried out using non-standard (informal) and standard (formal) units of measurement.
Standard units of measuring length - measuring length using millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m)
and kilometres (km).
Non-Standard units of measuring length - a variety of things used to measure length including paperclips, pipe cleaners,
feet, hands, cubes.
Did you know that horses are measured using hand-spans? A form of non-standard measurement.
Click on the video for an explanation of using non-standard units of measurement.

Print out the attached worksheet to use throughout this activity.
In groups of 4, measure each others right hand-span (the picture shows how to do this) and record it on your worksheet.
Choose the person with the largest hand-span to use for this activity.
Using a meter ruler, count how many hand-spans of that person are in a meter and record on the worksheet.
Click on "Length" below and follow the instructions from your worksheet and activity before starting.
Once you have completed the length activity, carry out the same activity for "height".

Today you have learnt to compare and order objects using their height and length.
Tonight you are to think about some non-standard (informal) units of measurement and think of ways in which you can
measure certain objects using these units. For example: what non-standard unit of measurement would you use to measure the classroom?
Be prepared to report back to the class your ideas!
Good luck!
